Yesterday was Groundhog Day. It appears Phil saw his shadow so six more weeks of winter. It was fun sitting with Meara on the computer yesterday looking for information about Groundhog day and groundhogs. She learned a lot. I have to admit I learned a couple of things I didn't know like why groundhogs wake up in the middle of winter to go outside.
I found this headband for Meara to color and wear at http://www.daniellesplace.com/images/groundhoghatpat.gif. She colored and cut it out herself. I helped her finish it off. She ran to the mirror to check it out then insisted that I take her picture. Usually it takes some convincing to get her to sit still for a picture.
Lately, we have spent a lot of time reading books on the computer that we don't own. I found a website that has many books to choose from. You can even add them to your own personal online bookshelf. http://www.lookybook.com/index.php Yesterday we read some books about groundhogs and Groundhog Day like this one we found online.
Fun groundhog facts we found online:
1. AKA woodchuck and whistlepig
2. they eat grass, bugs, and larva
3. they are diggers
4. they use tunnels to get to their underground home(burrow)
5. they can have up to six children who after two months move on to create a burrow of their own
6. groundhogs wake up half way through winter to find a mate

We borrowed "Gregory's Shadow" by Don Freeman (who wrote "Corduroy") at the library yesterday, not realizing it had to do with Groundhog's Day! It's a cute book :)
I want a GROUNDHOG!!~
he looks all cute and fat and furry! hee hee
I love the last fact you listed about how they wake up in the middle of winter to find a mate...
ITS BECAUSE THEIR COLD IN BED ALL BY THEMSELVES AND LIKE ALL MALES THEY THINK TO THEMSELVES..."DANG I NEED SOMEONE TO KEEP ME WARM...BETTER GO FIND ME A HEATER"!! ha ha ha
(at least thats what my hubbys thoughts would be if he was a groundhog!)
